SCI is a holdover from the early days of Clarivate's print products. SCIE became the online database in Web of Science, with SCI being a subset of more highly cited journals. No journals are being added to SCI going forward. The focus is now on SCIE as the resource for journals that meet Clarivate's impact criteria.
- All journals in SCI are in SCIE; not all journals in SCIE are in SCI. So yes, SCI is a subset of journals included in SCIE.
- SCI comprises those journals that are the most highly cited in their disciplines. Further, they show evidence of ongoing stable citation history. That is, they not only perform well, but they do so over time.
- There’s no particular advantage for an SCIE journal to also be included in SCI. As the summary above indicates, it’s more a legacy of various products than any meaningful statement of a journal’s positioning. Presumably, Clarivate at one time divvied up the journals for more accessible sales via multiple media.
